One of the most recurrent statements I got from business owners and vendors in 2023 was ‘OMG I never make any sales on Twitter! Do vendors even make money from there?’
Well, they do. On Twitter (even Elon Musk can’t pay me to call that app X), many business owners are not just getting customers, but are cashing out massively. When we had one of the best interviews ever with the CEO of Hera’s Closet, opening us up into the world of dropshipping in Nigeria, she surprisingly mentioned that Twitter was one of the brand’s best sales channels!

So the question is, how are these brands doing it? This article will show you practical steps that can help you grow your business on Twitter. But it doesn’t end there; you’ll also learn 5 hacks for selling on X in 2024!

1. Curate Interesting Tweets or Posts
This might seem like a no-brainer. You’re probably thinking ‘Well what have I been doing?'
You haven’t been creating interesting tweets.
Before a potential customer even finds your page, they’re likely going to see your tweet first. It could be on the X “For You” tab, or it could be on their timeline because it’s been retweeted by one of their followers, and to achieve that, your tweets have to be interesting.
As a business page, you do not have to restrict yourself to only tweeting about your business, but you also need to be careful to not sound unprofessional with your tweets.
Here are some of the ways you can create interesting tweets or posts for your business account on X.
Take crisp, clean pictures and make captivating videos. Make sure to use a great video editing app to get the best out of your videos!
Jump on funny and interesting trends. (Please and please, stay away from topics that will cause your business more harm than good)
Engage with your customers, especially when they make a post about your business.
Ask open-ended questions. These are the types of questions that will interest people enough to respond to you. You may even kick off a trend that way!
Share helpful tips related to your business. There are a lot of people on X, and they’re sometimes too engrossed in their timelines to open their browsers to search for information. You can be a source of (accurate) information!
Be quirky, light and funny with your posts. You could even throw a little banter once in a while!
Don’t restrict yourself to a particular style of posts, but do varied content instead. You can drop hot takes, funny posts, business posts, and even a song. Be interesting!
Making interesting posts on X aims to make your brand relatable enough for people and potential customers to want to visit your page. And they have to visit your page before a purchase can happen, right?
Now, that takes us to the next hack!

2. Optimise your Profile Page
When a customer lands on your profile page on X, there should clear indication that:
You’re a brand that can be trusted.
The customer understands exactly what your brand is about.
In a very clear and creative manner, you should be able to make your customers feel comfortable enough to follow your brand and spend some money. How?
Use a clean profile image, preferably your brand logo. Stay away from using your picture as your brand’s profile photo; you can always create your personal X page, and add your handle to your brand’s bio instead.
In the same vein, use a clean, great cover image. Your cover image (see examples below) should showcase what your brand does in a neat, legible way.
Use a name and handle that relates to your business. The best option is typically to go with your brand name, but if that’s been taken, do not despair. Find a more creative way to incorporate your business name and niche into the handle. The most important thing is that you must keep it simple enough for people to remember and be able to spell. (No unnecessary characters!)
Write a neat, short bio, and keep the links in it to a minimum. Instead of pasting multiple links, you can organise all your links by using the Linktree tool. Let your bio state explicitly what you sell, and you make it attention-grabbing, to create a memorable bio.
Add a professional category, and your location, but also indicate in your bio if you deliver outside of state.

3. Use Hashtags Generously, But Wisely
One practice that most businesses do is to plug every hashtag into their business post because it is trending but honestly, that won’t necessarily bring you customers. Plus, it’s a little bit tacky for a post about your business or products. So, you have to use hashtags wisely.
Also, hashtags should normally be categorised with the first hack, but to discuss fully the importance they play for your posts or tweets, we’re discussing them separately.
Hashtags open up your posts to a different level of visibility, especially if you use them appropriately. Here’s a list of appropriate ways you can use hashtags:
Look for popular industry hashtags, niche hashtags, and trending hashtags that align with your target audience and content.
Use hashtags that accurately represent your products, services, or target audience. Specific and clear hashtags help you reach the right people who are genuinely interested in what you offer.
Develop unique hashtags that represent your brand and can be associated with your business. For example, a fashion brand with the name "Enchanté Couture" can have this unique hashtag - #EnchantéStyles - as its unique brand. Remember, the more creative you are, the more memorable your brand will be!
Make sure your hashtags genuinely reflect the topic, theme, or message of your post.
A healthy combination of popular and niche hashtags can help you strike a balance. Popular hashtags expose your content to a larger audience, while niche hashtags connect you with more targeted and engaged users.
Follow hashtags relevant to your business to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and conversations. Engage with users, respond to posts, and contribute valuable insights.
While hashtags are powerful, it's important not to overdo it, so that you do not make your post appear cluttered and spammy.
4. Follow Other Vendors in Your Niche
One of the great perks of X or Twitter is that there are a lot of vendors and business owners like you. Now, you may choose to see it as having a lot of competition, which is kind of true, but there’s also a positive angle to it; having access to a pool of customers.
No, I’m not saying you should chase your competitor’s customers. (Well, not openly)
But instead, you can follow these vendors. There are so many things you can gain from doing this.
The opportunity to network and collaborate.
Staying informed on industry trends, what’s hot and what’s selling out fast.
The opportunity for partnerships, cross-promotion and referrals.
Becoming part of a community.
Gaining inspiration and learning from their content.
You can use hashtags to find vendors in your niche. Alternatively, you can also become a part of communities like pagesbydami or Bumpa community, where you can easily find more like-minded business owners to follow and collaborate with.
5. Be Consistent
If there’s one thing I know (as a person who occasionally shops from Nigerian brands on Twitter or X), it’s that I won’t buy from a brand that doesn’t post consistently on their page. If I land on your business page and see your last post was days ago? Or worse, weeks ago? I’m putting my wallet back in my bag and calling it a day.
Consistent posting does a lot for your business.
It helps build trust by showing your commitment and reliability, making you a credible and dependable brand.
It contributes to brand recognition, as consistent messaging and visuals create a memorable presence.
It enables you to build relationships with your audience through meaningful interactions and engagement.
It helps maintain top-of-mind awareness, increasing the likelihood of customers thinking of your brand when they have a need.
It allows you to showcase a range of products and services, catering to different preferences.
It capitalises on social proof, as consistent positive reviews and testimonials build confidence in potential customers.
While you do not need to spam your followers (especially if you’re posting unnecessary content), consistent posting keeps you in the mind of your audience always. So share those thoughts, create those polls, post those reviews, and even share a joke or two sometimes! It’ll go a long way to helping you convert customers.
Conclusion
With the 5 hacks above for selling on X (or Twitter), you’ll have an easier time figuring out how to make money from the platform this 2024! By implementing these strategies, you can effectively leverage the uniqueness of the platform to boost your sales, reach a wider audience and increase the reach of your brand. Happy selling on X!
