Like other social media channels like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc., WhatsApp is a massive channel for sales for business owners. In fact, for most business owners in Nigeria, it is most likely the first place where you start to market your business.

Think back to when you first started your business, even before you set up your social media accounts or maybe started using online selling platforms. Where did you first talk about your business? It was most likely on WhatsApp, yes? This is because your first customers are typically the people you know, and WhatsApp is the strongest medium to connect with that particular set of customers.

As your business grows, you can leverage WhatsApp as a marketing channel even more. For example, when customers place an order from any marketing channel you sell from, they have to provide their phone number, and this gives you the opportunity to market to them more (with their consent of course!) through WhatsApp, and one of the most effective ways to do that is by using the Broadcasts feature on the app.

The Broadcast feature basically lets you send messages to multiple people at the same time. It’s like using an SMS platform to send marketing SMSs or building an email list and using an email platform to send emails, except this time it’s on WhatsApp, and it’s absolutely free.

So, how do you take advantage of this? I’ll break all of this down in this article:

How to Set up a Broadcast Message on WhatsApp

How to Set up a Broadcast Message on WhatsApp

Before we go into talking about the kind of broadcast messages to send and to whom, here’s a step-by-step guide to setting up and sending a broadcast message.

  1. Create a broadcast list

  2. Importance of creating a broadcast list.

  3. Create a broadcast message

First, you have to create a broadcast list…

  1. Open your WhatsApp app.

  2. For Android users, tap ‘More options’ —> ‘New broadcast’. For iPhone users, tap on ‘Chats’ —> ‘Broadcast lists’ —> ‘New list’ at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Add the contacts you want to this broadcast list.

  4. For Android users, tap the green check button. For iPhone users, tap ‘Create’.

And that’s the first step. Next, you should go back to the list and give it a name. For Android users, you can do this simply by opening your broadcast list, clicking on ‘More options’ and then ‘Broadcast list info’, and then changing the name by tapping ‘Change broadcast list name’.

For iPhone users, open your broadcast lists, and tap on the ‘i’ next to the list you want to edit. Click on the ‘List Name’ box to edit and change the list name.

Editing your list is also how you can add new phone numbers, or delete a contact from the list.

If you use the WhatsApp Business app, it’s pretty much the same steps.

Now, what’s the importance of naming your broadcast lists?

what’s the importance of naming your broadcast lists

While the image above shows you the advantages of using WhatsApp broadcasts for marketing, here are the reasons you need to create segments for your broadcast lists.

  1. It helps you segment and understand why a customer is on a list. For example, you can name your lists like this: “New customers”, “Customers from Twitter”, “Customers that have spent over x amount”, and “Customers from discounts”.

Note: these are just examples and you can name your segments how best you like!

  2. It helps you target your customers with the right content fit for them. For example, if you know a customer came through a discount, then you can easily get them to purchase from you through another discount.

  3. It keeps everything neat and organised. You don’t want to have to store information in your head, and organising your lists will help take that burden away.

Next, you have to create a broadcast message…

This part is pretty straightforward. Whenever you want to send a broadcast out to any segment at all, all you need to do is open your broadcast lists, pick the segment you want to reach out to, craft your message and hit send. Everyone on that list will instantly get your message.

Simple, right? Now let’s get into the meat of things; what you should be sending and how you should be sending it!

What Broadcast Messages to Send to Customers with Usable Templates for Each

The benefits of using Broadcast messages to target your customers are endless. Knowing this, it is definitely a marketing channel to utilise constantly. But more than just knowing this, how you use it, what you say and how you send these messages also matter.

That is why segmentation is important. With your segments, you can send the right messages every time. Let’s look at the messages you should be sending, with a template for each! To use any of these templates, all you need to do is copy it and edit it to fit your style!

  1. New Website Launch

Best Practices & Top Tips for Creating Broadcast Messages.

whatsapp broadcast template messages for different segments of customers
  1. Don’t send too frequently. Let them not feel like you’re disturbing them every time your business name pops up in their chats list.

  2. Always add a CTA. This pushes them to take action. E.g instead of saying, ‘Visit our website’, add a link to your website with a clear CTA that says ‘Shop from our website’.

  3. Also, make sure to tell them to let you know if they’d like you to remove them from the list. (so that they don’t end up blocking your number!)

  4. Always ask them at the point of collecting their number if they would like you to send them messages about updates, sales, etc.

  5. Always keep it short and straight to the point. The longer it is, the less likely your customers will read it to the end and capture the important information.

  6. Use a warm and friendly tone. Use emojis appropriately to lighten the mood.

  7. Stick to one thing in your message. If you’re pushing a product, focus on that. If you’re running a sale, focus on that as well. Do not combine both messages in one broadcast so that you don’t end up overloading your recipients with information and no clear next line of action.
